Health and Wellness on a Cruise: Tips for Staying Fit

Cruising is synonymous with relaxation, indulgence, and adventure. However, maintaining your health and wellness while on a cruise is entirely possible, ensuring you return from your voyage feeling rejuvenated and fit. Here are some essential tips for staying fit and healthy during your cruise.

1. Choose Healthy Dining Options

Cruise ships offer many dining options, from buffets to fine dining. While it’s tempting to indulge, most ships also provide healthy choices:

  • Salad Bars: Opt for fresh vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats like avocados and nuts.

  • Grilled Over Fried: Choose grilled, baked, or steamed dishes instead of fried.

  • Portion Control: Try smaller portions of indulgent foods and balance with healthier options.

  • Courses: You do not need to have every course on the menu. It’s okay for a short cruise, but if you were going on a longer one, maybe think about cutting out a couple or at least one course from dinner. Over the years, there have been fewer courses offered. Years ago, you were guaranteed to get 5 to 6 courses in the main dining room every night. Nowadays, sometimes that can be only three courses, which isn’t so bad for the waistline. Expect to get between three to five courses in the main dining room.

2. Stay Hydrated

Keeping hydrated is crucial, especially in warmer climates or after indulging in cocktails. Carry a refillable water bottle and drink plenty of water throughout the day. This will also help curb unnecessary snacking. You will find that at the buffet area, there is a re-fill station, and on some ships, these are dotted around the ship. Some cruise lines do not like you directly refilling the bottle for hygiene reasons, which can be challenging. However, there are ways around it. Also, don’t panic if you have forgotten your bottle from home; you will be able to buy a nice branded re-fill bottle on the ship, a nice souvenir.

3. Utilize the Fitness Centre

Most modern cruise ships are equipped with state-of-the-art fitness centres. Here’s how to make the most of them:

  • Daily Routine: Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise daily. Mix cardio with strength training to keep your routine balanced.

  • Classes: Participate in fitness classes such as yoga, Pilates, or spin. These classes are often led by certified instructors and provide a structured workout.

4. Take the Stairs

This is a big one. If you are able instead of taking the elevator, use the stairs to move between decks. It’s an easy way to incorporate more physical activity into your day and burn extra calories. If you didn’t know, there are a lot of stairs on a ship.

5. Walk and Explore

Exploring the ship and ports of call on foot is a fantastic way to stay active:

  • Deck Walks: Many ships have walking or jogging tracks on the upper decks, or some ships have a wrap-around promenade deck, offering a scenic way to stay fit. Most ships will have a sign somewhere on the deck that tells you how many laps a mile is, and you can pretty much guarantee there will be a walk-a-mile activity every morning. This will be advertised in the cruise schedule and delivered to your room each evening.

  • Shore Excursions: Opt for active excursions such as hiking, cycling, or guided walking tours. These activities allow you to explore new destinations while staying active.

6. Mindful Indulgence

Cruises are known for their endless food options, but mindful eating can help you enjoy without overindulging:

  • Treats in Moderation: Enjoy your favourite treats but balance them with healthier meals.

  • Listen to Your Body: Eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full.

7. Relax and De-stress

Mental wellness is as important as physical health. Cruises offer numerous ways to relax:

  • Spa Services: Treat yourself to a massage, facial, or other spa services.

  • Mindfulness and Meditation: Find a quiet spot on the ship for meditation or attend a mindfulness class.

8. Stay Active with Onboard Activities

Take advantage of the various activities offered on the ship that promote physical activity:

  • Swimming: Enjoy a few laps in the pool.

  • Dance Classes: Join in on dance classes or nightly dancing events.

  • Sports: Engage in sports like basketball, mini-golf, or rock climbing.

9. Get Enough Sleep

Ensure you get plenty of rest. A good night’s sleep is vital for overall health and well-being. Stick to a regular sleep schedule and create a restful environment in your cabin.

10. Be Prepared

Pack accordingly to maintain your wellness routine:

  • Exercise Gear: Bring your workout clothes and sneakers.

  • Hydration: Keep a water bottle handy.

Staying fit and healthy on a cruise is all about balance. By incorporating these tips, you can enjoy all the luxuries of your cruise while maintaining your wellness goals. So, go ahead and indulge in the delights of cruising, knowing that you can return home feeling refreshed and revitalised. Happy cruising!
