Norwegian Fjord cruises are a breathtaking way to explore the natural beauty of Norway. If you're planning such a trip, here are some key factors to consider to ensure an unforgettable experience:
1. Season and Weather
The best time to cruise the Norwegian fjords is from late spring to early autumn (May to September). During these months, you'll enjoy milder weather and longer daylight hours, especially during the summer when you can experience the Midnight Sun.
2. Itinerary and Ports of Call
Look for itineraries that include iconic fjords such as Geirangerfjord, Nærøyfjord, and Sognefjord. These fjords offer stunning landscapes, waterfalls, and charming villages. Ensure the cruise stops at key ports like Bergen, Stavanger, Alesund, and Flam, which provide rich cultural experiences and excursions.

3. Excursions and Activities
Choose a cruise line that offers a variety of excursions and activities, such as hiking, kayaking, and guided tours coach tours. Visiting the fjords is all about immersing yourself in nature, so take advantage of opportunities to explore the scenic landscapes up close. The good thing about a Fjords cruise is that it’s accessible to anyone, even those with mobility issues. It’s not just about climbing a mountain on foot. The road and tunnel systems in Norway are fantastic and well-designed. They will get you anywhere, albeit sometimes a little hair-raising when you’re on a hairpin bend on the side of a mountain. It’s part of the fun, though.
Here is a list of excursions offered by cruise lines for Norwegian Fjords. Notably, the ports of Alta and Tromsø are excluded. While there are cruises called "Land of the Midnight Sun" lasting usually around 12 to 14 nights that travel up to the northernmost point in Europe, the North Cape, I will address these ports and their association with Northern Lights cruises in a separate blog post. For this list, I’m just focusing on ports primarily included in a cruise that would be marketed as a Fjords cruise.

4. Ship Size and Amenities
Smaller ships can navigate narrower fjords and offer a more intimate experience. However, larger ships often provide more amenities and entertainment options. Decide what's more important for your trip: accessing smaller, more remote areas or enjoying a wide range of onboard activities.

P&O Iona is a large ship designed specifically for cruises to the Fjords.
5. Onboard Experience
Consider the type of onboard experience you desire. Luxury cruise lines offer high-end amenities, fine dining, and spacious cabins. If you're looking for a family-friendly option, choose a cruise line that provides activities for children and family-oriented excursions.
6. Wildlife and Nature Viewing
The Norwegian fjords are home to diverse wildlife, including whales, seals, and a variety of bird species. Check if the cruise line offers wildlife-watching tours or has naturalists onboard who can enhance your understanding of the local ecosystem.

7. Cultural Experiences
Norwegian culture is rich and varied, with a strong Viking heritage. Look for cruises that offer cultural experiences, such as visits to museums, historical sites, and traditional performances. Engaging with local culture can add a unique dimension to your trip.
8. Sustainable Practices
Norway places a strong emphasis on sustainability. Opt for cruise lines prioritising environmental responsibility, from waste management to energy efficiency. This not only helps preserve the pristine environment but also ensures a more eco-friendly travel experience.
9. Reviews and Recommendations
Research reviews and seek recommendations from fellow travellers. Hearing about others' experiences can provide valuable insights into what you can expect from different cruise lines and itineraries.
10. Cost and Value
Finally, consider the cost and what is included in the price. Some cruises offer all-inclusive packages that cover excursions, meals, and beverages, while others may charge extra for these amenities. Compare the overall value to find a cruise that fits your budget and preferences. Also, one important factor to watch is whether the ports listed on the itinerary are actually stopping at the ports or are just sailing by. i.e. they do not stop. You will usually see these listed on the itinerary as cruise-by.
By considering these factors, you can choose the perfect Norwegian Fjord cruise that matches your interests and ensures a memorable journey through one of the world's most stunning natural landscapes. Happy cruising!
